Because we care deeply about the safety of our children, all volunteers are required to complete a background check. There is no cost to you, unless you'd like to donate to the cost of your background check.
Volunteerism is at the heart of the Learn United effort. No matter how many dollars we raise or books we collect, we must have caring individuals to help children learn to read. There are many ways to volunteer with Learn United and most involve tutoring or reading opportunities.
TUTORS: Tutors go to classrooms and other educational environments to help children learn reading skills. Activities include: sounding out simple words, piecing together sentences, comprehending paragraphs and more. Don't let the word "tutor" scare you—anyone can help young children sharpen their skills. Remember, these are third graders so the reading lessons are very simple.
READERS: Volunteer readers meet with a class or group of children and read a story to them. As they read, the volunteers ask questions and get the students involved. It's simple and fun. And it makes a real difference, too. When children see that someone cares enough to take time to share the gift of reading, they begin to understand that it is an important part of being a grown-up. They also see that reading is enjoyable, even "cool." They are encouraged to read more on their own.
It doesn't take a lot of time to volunteer. Even if you are a busy professional with just a few hours to give, you can make a significant difference. Contact us and we'll find the opportunity that's right for you.
All of our volunteers are given a brief orientation before they begin working with children. We also have resources for our volunteers to help them become great tutors and to help them share the Learn United message with others.
